Climbing Mount Kinabalu in only 2D1N?

Would you prefer to print out this information? Find out how.
For those who have a very limited time to spend on climbing Mount Kinabalu for 3D2N, you can actually cut down your trip to 2D1N. You need to make some minor adjustment of your travel itinerary as you will not stay in Kinabalu Park HQ for the first night. The only one night stay for the climb to Mount Kinabalu is your place to stay in Laban Rata.
Before we proceed to the adjustment, there are some things that you have to remember.
  1. The distance from Kota Kinabalu to Kinabalu Park HQ is about 90 kilometers and Kundasang to Kinabalu Park HQ is about 7 kilometers.
  2. You need to be in Kinabalu Park HQ on the day you are climbing before 9.00 am. Timpohon Gate (where you will start your climb) will be closed at 10.00 am. No other climbers are allowed to climb after that time from Timpohon Gate by the Sabah Parks.
Why I need to tell you this? Because it is important for you to plan your first night stay to substitute your accommodation in Kinabalu Park HQ. So, there are 2 ways you can choose for your first night stay.

1. Spend the night in one of the hotels or hostels in Kota Kinabalu city

Wake up early and catch a bus or taxi to Kinabalu Park at the least 7.30 am, and hopefuly you will arrive in Kinabalu Park HQ just before the gate is closed. Choose from one of the travel package below. There are some travel operators who start their journey from Kota Kinabalu at 6.30 am.
Travel operators in the table below provides Mount Kinabalu climbing package which includes the transport from Kota Kinabalu to Kinabalu Park HQ. They will usually pick you up from any hotel/hostel around Kota Kinabalu early morning (as early as 6.30 am) and drive you straight to Kinabalu Park HQ for the climb. They have make your life easier by booking your stay in Laban Rata for your second night accommodation.

If you are one of the above named operator, and would like to update your tour package, please drop me an email.

Please note:
  1. The above tour is subject to availability of climbing permits, which are limited as not to create too much negative impact on the unique nature of Malaysia's first World Heritage Site;
  2. Since climbing Mount Kinabalu is just about the most popular tour package in Sabah, we highly recommend that you make your availability enquiry at least three months in advance.
  3. Allow 24 - 48 hours before your availability inquiry is confirmed. If alternate dates or accommodation are given it is because there is no other choice.
  4. Availability confirmations for climbing Mount Kinabalu are strictly valid for 24 hours only, after which the provisional booking with Sabah Parks is automatically released.
  5. We are not responsible for any cancellation or difficulties during you trip with the above travel operator. We only provide the information.

2. Spend the night in one of the B&B, chalet, hostel or hotel in Kundasang town

Kundasang is situated about 7 kilometers from Kinabalu Park HQ, and along the way, there are many places for you to choose for the stay (most of them provides mountain lodges and hostel-like accommodations). It will only take few minutes for you to get to Kinabalu Park HQ for your climb. The best time to get to Kinabalu Park HQ is before 8.00 am.
To make your life easier, I manage to find out the easiest way to book for a place in Kundasang. You can contact one of these four resort operator's website and maybe book yourself an accommodation. All the accommodations provider below situated less than 7 km form Kinabalu Park HQ. In the morning of your climb, there are many buses feeding Kinabalu Park HQ that you can catch from Kundasang town.
After booking the place to stay in Kundasang, do not forget to book your place to stay during the climb at Laban Rata from Sutera Sanctuary Lodges.
  1. Kinabalu Pine Resorts Sdn. Bhd. Tel: +6088-889388 (Kundasang) / +6088-262233 (Sales Ofice, Kota Kinabalu)
  2. Kinabalu Rose Cabin Tel: +6088-889233
  3. Zen Garden Resorts Tel: +6088-889242/3/4/52
  4. Perkasa Hotel Mt. Kinabalu, Kundasang Tel: +6088-889511
There are other accommodations around Kundasang, but they do not have a good website to present their services. If you choose to stay in one of the places in Kundasang, (that means you DIY-ing your frist night trip to the summit) you do not have to follow any of the travel operator above.
