Where to ask for the best Linux Distribution?

I know, when you would like to try Linux, you do not know where to ask to get the best distribution for you. Linux distribution (aka Distro) is a variety or options for your computer to run Linux. As an example, if you choose Windows, you can only have XP, Vista, 2000 or 98 (Although it’s not a good example). That’s about it. But, for Linux, you can have thousands of options (distro) to choose.

You will ask me, which one do I know that will suits you? Well, it depends on what do you want to do with your daily computer usage. Because of the nature of Linux distro, you can choose from hundreds of distro that are available for you to use, and you will get the same Linux kernel advantage with a different graphical use interface.

DistrowatchDistrowatch is the place for you to go if you decided to try Linux and get the distro that is suitable for you. It is a website that also features the latest Linux distro in this world.

I went to Distrowatch about 2 years ago, and get my first copy of Linux distro – Knoppix Live CD, that took me nearly 6 hours to download from my slow internet connection. But it was worth it. I then download Xandros OCE 3.0.2 and managed to install it in my only notebook – and dual-boot! The journey with Linux was difficult initally, but when you ready to learn something new everyday, it was really a joyride.

Are you a Linux User? Get yourself counted!

The Linux Counter is started as a “for fun” project to find out how many Linux users there are worldwide. The basic idea is for people to register themselves as being a Linux user. Of course, this way you won’t get all Linux users counted as not every Linux user will register himself at the Linux Counter site.

Thus, the only way to “know” the number of Linux users worldwide, is to make a guess, preferably a not-too-wild guess of the number of Linux users. Not making wild guesses there is only one way to go: statistics.

So, the main purpose of the Linux Counter is to deal with statistics on all kinds of numbers related to Linux usage. It started with statistics on the number of Linux users and it extended to statistics on Linux users, the machines they use, software they use and in what part of the world Linux users are actually living.

Linux CounterA second purpose of the Linux Counter is to make it possible for Linux users to find each other. The Linux Counter is reporting Linux users sorted per almost any place in the world. So, when Linux users want their information to be public, you can quite simply find those users who live in places near you.

I am counted!

Mount Kinabalu Summit Trail (Day Climb) Slideshow

Thank you Ganesh for your nice photos. I managed to select few good photos to create a 2 minutes slideshow on Mount Kinabalu climbing, mainly on the first phase of the climb in Summit Trail (Day Climb). If it would be longer, the file will be too big and it will slow to be uploaded to your browser.

For the time being, I only manage to put it up on a special HTML page, and maybe next time, I will find a way to put it up here in this blog. I also have submitted the slideshow to Google Video, hoping that Google will approved it ASAP. I tried to upload it to YouTube, but YouTube have problem with my registration. I don’t know why.

Make sure you have your speaker on. Check out the video slideshow here, and give me some comments!

KKIA Terminal 2 to also cater for international flights

AirAsiaKOTA KINABALU: The KKIA Terminal Two building is not only to cater for domestic flights, but would also serve international carriers.

The Prime Minister said although low cost carriers Air Asia and FAX are the main players for now, they would also serve the international sector.

“It is not merely a domestic terminal,” he said.

Speaking at the launching yesterday, he said that although the terminal is meant to cater for budget airlines, it doesn’t mean that the services rendered at the terminal are sub-standard in nature.

How can a Malaysian open a US bank account?

I received an email from E*TRADE Hong Kong this morning, informing me about their Chinese New Year Customer Service Hours. Ironically, I have not get any formal reply from E*TRADE US about my application, which I sent 9 months ago. So, basically, I am in their database as one of their customer, but I did not get my account number and user ID.

E*TRADE FinancialWell, as it is still morning here in this part of the world, I decided to call E*TRADE Hong Kong to ask about my application. The customer service center answer my phone call, (which I use iTalk from TM) very professionally and prompt. I only manage to give him my full name and last 4 digit of my account (it was stated in the email), as he required that info to check whether I am one of their customer or not. It only took him less than 2 minutes to process my queries, and after answering few security questions (mostly my personal info), he gave me the account number, my user ID and password. Now I have a US bank account!

You may asked me why I need a US bank account? Well, to tell you the truth, US authority have a very strict rule on foreigners opening a bank account in US after the September 11 tragedy. It includes Malaysia, which is an unfortunate. Opening a US bank account is important for those who deals with internet marketing, i.e. handling international money around the internet. By having an account in US, it will be easy for us Malaysian to handle the money, as most giant companies in the net requires the internet marketer to have an account (like Paypal) to withdraw your ‘frozen money’.

If you are Malaysian, and search the net for US bank account to be open, you can found none. E*TRADE is the only financial institution in US that enable you to have one account, whereby you can use it to do a telegraphic transfer (TT) to your local banks. It is not a bank. We just use one of their finacial service to get the money keep before it is transfer it to our account.

I don’t know about you. I use E*TRADE as one of the tools for me to receive money from international travelers who would like to ask me to help them book a package or accommodation for their Mount Kinabalu adventure travel.

Are they reliable? Well, we have to see that. I guess…
