N|vu – The FREE (and Open Source) WYSIWYG HTML Generator

Few weeks back I received an email from a good friend of mine, Aiden who is a computer expert but unfortunately have a very limited idea on how to build a website. He complained to me that he had tried to use Adobe GoLive, FrontPage and Dreamweaver – almost all the expensive website building software around, but failed.

“The only problem that I am facing is actually, I don’t have the knowledge to build a website , and I don’t have the knowledge to use a web hosting service.” That was the exact words that I quoted from the email. I know that deep inside his heart, he wanted to build the website, but did not have good information about it. Are you in the same shoes as Aiden? I was actually in the same situation as him, about 4 months ago. I did tried Dreamweaver once (a pirated one), but I ditched it as it is not quite suits me and it’s illegal.

After doing some Googling around the internet, I found N|vu – a WYSIWYG (means what-you-see-is-what-you-get) HTML (means website) Generator. I was very delighted to know that it is also an Open Source Software and compatible with Linux, Windows and Mac. I downloaded and installed on my Windows and Linux Xandros machine.

I did manage to tell Aiden about this software, and currently he is struggling his brain out figuring out how to use it đŸ˜‰ Good Luck, Aiden!

Before you start using N|vu, you have to ask yourself why you want to have a website? If you have an objective on why you want a website, it would not be difficult as you know what are you going to write. If you are serious on building a website that could generate some income, then download FREE ebook from SBI!. Print it out and read. You may get some ideas of the theme of your website.

So, what is so special about N|vu? N|vu is one of the easiest tool to generate and build a website without you having to know about HTML (initially). If you know how to use Words, the using N|vu should not be a major problem. There are a lot of online guides and forums on how to use N|vu.

The best nvu tutorials that I can suggest are:

  1. http://www.thesitewizard.com/gettingstarted/nvu1.shtml. Christopher gives you an easy illustration how to make use of your N|vu. It’s a five lesson course. Follow the lesson step-by-step. I have to admit that it is really an “idiot’s guide”.
  2. http://www.webbriefcase.com.au/categories/how-tos/nvu/. This is also a good guide. They show you by using video. These two resources makes it easy for you to get the basic understanding of N|vu usage.
  3. http://forum.nvudev.org/viewtopic.php?t=397. It is a forum post that list out ALL the information that you can get about N|vu. It’s a lot, and some of them might not be suitable for beginners. I would advice you to learn the first two resources befor you go and browse the listed links. If you follow the above steps, you can easily build your own website in a few days.

Have a nice lesson on how to use N|vu!

I would like to confess that although I put “Powered by SBI!” at the bottom of every page, I did not have SBI to host my website. I only use the ebook to gain information on what are my website going to be, but I use Exabytes to host it. I did it because I could not afford SBI! webhosting package.
